2018 Chardonnay

In Margaret River, considered one of Australia’s premium chardonnay growing regions, Cape Mentelle creates wines of plush texture, depth and power, yet balanced with a fine frame of acidity. Built around the classic local Gingin clone, this multilayered and complex wine draws upon an additional array of clones and multiple microclimates within our sites, benefitting from cool nights to capture an exquisite vibrancy of fruit.
Halliday Wine Companion 2022
A mix of 4 clones; Gin Gin, 76, 95 and 5. Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild ferment in barrel. A very sophisticated nose, textural, worked and complex. The fruit has a rich, ripe viscosity to it and a fierce salty edge. Red apple skins and tea leaves, salted kelp, slippery ripe yellow peach and a fair whack of curry leaf, brine and preserved lemon. This is happening. A subtle shift in style here, more multifaceted and shimmering, always moving, like dappled sunlight. The best chardonnay under this label to date.
2021 WA Wine Review
There is an engaging mix of the old and the new here. It's a more robust and full-bodied chardonnay with lots of candied fruit, butterscotch and crème brûlée, but there is also a degree of delicacy and restraint with fine persistence. The palate is layered with roasted nuttiness and some warmed morning brioche.
